Friday 2nd July. 29 members from various churches in the Strettons enjoyed an outing together , visiting Rug Chapel and Valle Crucis Abbey.
Rug Chapel near Corwen, built in 1637 was the private chapel of Colonel William Salesbury. Though simple architecturally it is inside a feast of colourful decoration and wonderful carved woodwork. It survived the Victorian Gothic revival and is largely unaltered from the date of its dedication.
In contrast Valle Crucis Abbey, near Llangollen, founded by Cistercian monks in 1201 is an isolated ruin which suffered Henry VIII’s suppression of the monasteries in 1537.
A great day out, wonderful company and much appreciated coach driver who squeezed the coach down the narrowest of lanes and entrances and cheerfully navigated around massive road closures.
